Learn to proportioning correctly and to control your line work as well as to draw what you see and not what you think. Complete 2 stunning projects to build confidence. You will learn how to spot mistakes before it is too late, learn how to proportion everything, to draw realistically, to shade correctly and to build super confidence. Different shading techniques, It is my belief that true creative freedom only occurs once technical knowledge has been dealt with. The more you draw, the better you will be at painting.

PAINT - (beginner to advanced)

ACTION PAINTING - WALK IN AND PAINT © (Each class is 3 hours long)
Our new course in painting teaches you to use various quick methods to complete a painting in either 1, 2 or 3 classes. Each class is 3 hours long. Subject matter is pre-selected according to popular choices. These include landscapes, still lives, portraits, florals, animals, seascapes, abstract, musical, people (figurative) and so on. No drawing will be required as all designs will be pre-drawn by the teachers. Choose from a choice of hardboard, canvas stretched over hardboard or canvas for each painting. Teachers will demonstrate the particular technique or ‘trick’ and will then help you to copy it onto yours. An astonishing amount of different techniques will be included, like impasto (thick paint), palette knife, current trends, sponging, ragging, s’graffito (scratching off), texture, dry brushing, cut-outs and many blending techniques, pasting, wax resist, and many many more. Learn quick and effective ways to create amazing paintings and short-cut secrets artists use. No experience required. This course is for the student who wants to relax, learn and accomplish an artwork with the minimum effort in the shortest span of time. A ‘make-up’ open lesson is held every three months to complete paintings that have not been finished due to absence. No private work can be discussed or helped with – all work will be dealt with in group formation.

These are also presented once monthly on the first Saturday of every month.

Introductory courses

PASTEL 1 -
(after DRAW 1 or DRAW 2)

INTRODUCTION TO SOFT PASTEL COURSE ©
In this introductory course, you will learn the differences in papers and supports for pastels. Then you will be taught how to control blending and how to define areas, as well as all the different techniques, including advanced shading techniques. The pastel course includes teaching the uses and applications of charcoal, charcoal pencils, pastel pencils & conte crayon. Other considerations that will be dealt with are colour, translucency, atmospheric perspective, surface (texture) and several small projects. Either courses DRAW1 or DRAW2 is required before starting with the pastel course. No homework required.

±4 MONTHS

OILS 1 & ACRYL 1-
(after DRAW 1 or DRAW 2)

INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTS© AND
INTRODUCTION TO ACRYLIC PAINTS
©
As with the pastel course, these introductory courses will enable you to fully comprehend the workings and uses of these painting mediums. You will learn how to prepare your support (what you paint on) and then you will be shown how to apply method and structure to what you paint. Furthermore, you will be taught to plan well and omit problems by applying a foundation coat. The two headaches of art - blending and redefining - are dealt with. Other techniques such as alla prima (applying paint directly), impasto (painting with texture), palette knife painting, washes and glazing will also be taught to you. A study of colour is included as well as dealing with perspective, translucency and contrasts, surface textures and realism. Either courses DRAW1 or DRAW2 is required before starting with the painting courses. No homework required. (Please note, contrary to popular belief, that in degrees of difficulty, oil paints are the easiest to master, followed by acrylics and then water colours, which requires the most discipline, patience and skill.)

±4 MONTHS

WC 1 -
(after DRAW1 or DRAW2)

INTRODUCTION TO WATER COLOURS ©
With water colours, you need to be clued-up with paper types and be able to stretch paper. After you are able to stretch paper well, we will teach you to do a plain, variegated, angled and graded wash which requires a great amount of finesse. All other practices of water colours will then be taught. They include negative shaping, wet-in-wet painting, bleeding and dragged bleeding, superimposing, edging, masking, s’graffito, dry brush, encaustic and salt effects, wet-on-dry and other effects. The use of colour is also taught and several projects are in place to help you master the uses of water colours. Either courses DRAW1 or DRAW2 is required before starting with the water colour course. No homework required.

2 DIMENTIONAL CONTEMPORARY DRAWING / PAINTING COURSES
These brand new courses deal more with considering your own understanding with issues such as your responses to ideas, materials and techniques. Symbolic reactions are investigated through elements of art and media. Content and context are explored in various ways by drawing your attention to internal commentary rather than mechanical copying. The course runs for only 7 to 8 weeks, and plenty of self study, material collection and homework is required. A lot of discussions, demonstrations, slide shows and experimentation will be held in class. Classes will be around 4 hours. There is less emphasis on your skill at drawing and painting and more on your ideas and implementation thereof.

(Short course with definite dates starting in 2010):

INTRODUCTION TO ART APPRECIATION AND ART HISTORY ©
Ever heard the dangerous comment “I don’t know anything about art, but I know what I like”. This course will investigate and examine the relationship between the artist, his work, his public, his intent and the viewers’ responsibility in terms of considering an art work instead of judging it. You do not have to be an art guru to understand and appreciate visual arts; your mind only needs to be dilated and unblocked from incorrect perceptions. To appreciate is not the same as to like. Our aim is to educate by means of illustration, considering values and to discuss, an art works’ elements and content. We also delve into the phenomena of public demand and its socio consequences – i.e. the popularity of conveyer belt art especially inherent to South Africa. You will learn why paintings reach exorbitant prices at auction houses and you will realise that art is more powerful than opinion. The history segment will consist out of a short chronological discussion, thereafter you can choose an area of study that interests you most to complete a project in.

Students choice - (after DRAW 1 or DRAW 2)

OWN1

STUDENTS OWN CHOISE OF MEDIA & TECHNIQUE©
When you have completed one of the basic drawing courses (DRAW1 or DRAW2), you are free to choose your next media and style that you would like to master. You may choose any media and form of art that you personally favour. These include drawing, painting, pastel, collage, montage, texture (impasto) painting, palette knife painting, direct (alla prima) painting, freehand drawing and related techniques, sculpture, realism, impressionism, fauvism, expressionism, pre-raphaelite, classical, cubism, abstract, pop, modern, Italian, French, Dutch, oils, acrylics, gouache, water colours, mixed media, charcoal, conte, portraiture, nudes, stills, landscapes, florals, architectural, and so on.
You can set your own pace and you are not subject bound. Your own choice of style and technique is more important than us telling you what to do because you need to love what you do! This way, you remain interested and enthusiastic about your artwork, whilst gaining skills and direction, your teacher will move with you. Homework is not necessary.
Please note that the above course is different from the introductory courses (PASTEL1, OIL1, ACRYL1, and WC1). With OWN1, you will start with your choice of media and picture or idea without any knowledge or exercise. We will teach you how to approach the painting step by step and you will learn all that you need to know about your painting in terms of technique as you go along.

Corporate group courses

CORP1 - (anyone)

LEFT AND RIGHT BRAIN DEVELOPMENT ©
There is a world wide movement towards emotive and creative integration into the current corporate climate. Due to the cold and sometimes inflexible nature of business, a global return to compassionate ethics and values is required to motivate business people. This motivation, coupled with creative evocation and play in turn generates lost enthusiasm and inventive thought for weary sales teams and corporates. For each business, a different strategy and design can be devised for their particular needs. Drawing utilises both the left (analytical, mathematical) and right (interpretive, intuitive) brain spheres and encourages deep absorption and concentration. This is encouraged, but interaction is not left out. The student is encouraged to explore spatial and intuitive elements within the course parameters.
A left brainer is fixated on reason – to bridge the gap they will enjoy an analytical discussion on paintings from well-known artists they regard as abstract gibberish. Art consists of mathematical equations (composition), musical elements (rhythm and harmony), unification (colour, form and line etc.), content and context and so on – many of these are left brain elements. Through understanding you generate appreciation and enthusiasm. An association between art and finance can be an encouraging topic to further interest – for example; A six dollar chair that Van Gogh painted that couldn’t sell is now worth $6 000 000. But, it is our experience, that common creative expression and creative concentration reap the best rewards fits. The importance of play and team is emphasized; people learn to relax and to enjoy one another. Further strategies applied include a special coffee break that includes food, which further motivates de-stressing and so on. These special courses have been proven quite successfully with corporations such as Schenker Logistics.

WHY?

The Drawing Course is not about sketching only. It involves many facets that need to be dealt with which are part of painting too. These include eye proficiency and pressure control, tonal value interpretation and application, perceptional skills, proportioning (blocking), composition, planning, blending, and problem solving that will arise when drawing or painting. We cannot spend all our time on a student who struggles with drawing and forsake others because he/she refuses to take a short course. Besides – the drawing courses are thoroughly enjoyable. Remember that a true artist LIKE all facets of art and will attempt anything.

All in one

Q&A

I’VE NEVER DRAWN BEFORE or
WHAT ABOUT TALENT?

Talent is experience applied in a structured way. Its stigma is very wide off the mark. All our students (whether ‘talented’ or not) are accomplished and fully competent. This shouldn’t be a cause for concern, by following small and clever steps, you will gain stunning results.

HOW ARE THE CLASSES CONDUCTED?
A limited number of people are in a class and everyone is occupied with his/her own work. The atmosphere is relaxed, with music and coffee/tea served with every class.
Interaction is limited to your specific personality. Your progress as an artist is our main concern. Beginners and Advanced students are mixed, so the beginner will visually be exposed to different media and techniques.

HOW EXPENSIVE ARE THE ART MATERIALS?
We suggest you gradually build up and accumulate art materials.
For DRAW1, you are looking at roughly R100 for all your materials, thereafter you always start with a basic set of media and then build onto it with individual tubes or sticks. Most art materials are available from us.

WHAT MORE DO I NEED TO KNOW?

  • Workshops are held periodically on Sundays and are not compulsory. They include anatomy, printing, techniques, different media and many other subjects. They are usually around 4 to 6 hours long.
  • Portfolios for tertiary admission have long been a part of the classes and have enjoyed phenomenal success. However, the student needs sufficient time to complete his/her drawing training before compiling a portfolio.
  • Classes are conducted in English and Afrikaans. Ages 14 and up.
  • You may join for a minimum of 24 classes (6 months) unless otherwise stipulated.
  • Missed classes cannot be redeemed or refunded.
  • There are recesses during the year when no classes are given. You will still receive 24 classes per subscription (unless otherwise stipulated).
  • You can start at the beginning of any month.
  • You receive 1 class per week, 24 classes over a period of 6 months (unless otherwise stipulated).
REGISTRATION
REGISTRATION Physical registration is required for all parties. When you have completed your registration form, you can organize with our offices for a suitable time to come in to one of the studios for registration. Registration must be accompanied by full payment. No time slot will be allocated or processed without proper registration.

METHODS OF PAYMENTS
CASH OR CHEQUE
CREDIT OR DEBIT CARD (Kempton Park)

Creative ability ensues due to ‘clicks’. Some experience it earlier than others, also dependant on the type of subject (or dynamic) to be understood and implemented, but if the student allows him/herself to trust and believe processes; creative understanding occurs. Whether art and the making of it is generated intellectually or spiritually, it contains strange powers that can be exploited to heart’s content.

If you think you aren’t good enough to draw or paint, you are encountering your first very important challenge – your mind restricting you from creativity. I couldn’t draw at 6, neither at 15, yet I started selling paintings at 16. I thought: “If I apply structure, I can” and I did. These ‘structures’ aren’t available in books or with money greedy art teachers. They can only teach what they know. Today, I can draw and paint and sculpt whatever I want, how I want, in whichever way I want because I understand art. And I do not care about external comment or competition.
GO FOR IT!!!
